Follow for follow is a trade. You follow me, I follow you, and the number on both profiles goes up. It shows up as a DM from a stranger, a reply under a post, a group, or a site that pays you in credits to follow accounts you have never read.
The follow is the whole deal. There is no shared subject, no similar size, and no reason for either person to still be there next month. F4F is that DM. A pact is two accounts that would have followed each other anyway, doing it at the same time.
Why they unfollow
X limits how many accounts you can follow, and how that number sits against the people who follow you. Someone running follow-for-follow all day fills the limit. The only way to follow the next batch is to unfollow the last one. You were the last one.

What a pact checks
The room is public X accounts, with or without Premium. A protected account cannot join, because a locked follow graph cannot be checked.
You share a niche. You pick up to 5 niches. The feed is people who share one of yours. Anyone who shares none of them is not in it.
You share a size, or they are smaller. Bronze through 500, Silver from 501 to 2,000, Gold from 2,001 to 10,000, Platinum from 10,001 to 50,000, and Diamond from 50,001 up. You are never offered someone above your band. A pact with an account fifty times your follower count is a favor they can take back.
The follow happens on X, by your hand. Then you tap I followed, and they check their own X and confirm it. We never post, DM, follow, or unfollow for you. You have 48 hours after the pact is on. A request nobody accepts expires after 7 days.
Then you both keep following for 28 days. If one of you never proved the follow, that side is guilty. Their trust drops and the broken pact shows on their profile. On day 28 the pact is honored.
